On tonight's motivational call that I do every Sunday, I started the call playing a song by John Mayer called "Waiting on the World to Change". This song and the recent results of the United States Presidential election really inspired me to write this article.
At the beginning of the song, in the 1st verse, Mayer says, "Now we see everything that's going wrong with the world and those who lead it, just feel like we don't have the means to rise above and beat it so we keep waiting on the world to change." Then he goes on to say, "It's hard to beat the system when we're standing at a distance, so we keep waiting on the world to change".
So many people in our society, as a whole, feel so inferior that they do not think that their personal contribution can make a difference in the world we live in. This reality brings me to one of my favorite quotes, "People are so anxious to change their situations, but yet, they are unwilling to change themselves!" In order for your life to change, you have to change. In order for your life to get better, you have to get better.

November 4, 2008 history was made as Barack Obama was the 1st ever African American elected to the position of President of the United States of America. Although this event didn't change the majority of people's financial situation right away or change their social status right away, it did however change the way people perceive our country, not only within the US but around the world! This accomplishment was not only a huge accomplishment for African Americans, but I believe a HUGE accomplishment for Americans in general. It took this event occurring to inspire people to believe that change in their lives is possible as well.
Change is something that is gradual process of converting from one state to another. It is amazing how different individuals in history have forced us to change the way we see our country, the world, and ourselves, by their personal accomplishments. Below are a few other accomplishments prior to Obama getting elected the President of our country that helped shape the views of people who pursue continued change and development.
In 1823, Alexander Lucius Twilight was the first African American college graduate in America from Middlebury College. He did went on to become the first black to hold a seat as a State Elected Official as a Vermont legislature in 1836. With all of the racial divide going on in our country during that time, who would have thought that a black person could go to college, graduate, then become an elected official in a state legislature over a majority white population? Twilight obviously did.
